What's IPR?

IPR, or Interproximal Reduction, is a common procedure in orthodontic treatment. It helps resolve crowding, reduces black triangles between teeth, and improves crown proportions.

IPR in 2025

In modern dentistry, CAD/CAM systems require highly controlled IPR. The most popular methods for IPR include metal discs, metal strips, and diamond burs. While metal strips and discs allow for minimal yet controlled reduction, they also come with drawbacks such as patient discomfort and a higher risk of soft tissue damage.

Diamond burs, on the other hand, offer greater comfort for both patients and dentists. However, they require the procedure to be performed perpendicular to the long axis of the teeth, which compromises visualization and hand stability. Additionally, only the small diameter at the bur tip is used, increasing the risk of uncontrolled and uneven reduction.

When IPR is performed parallel to the long axis of the teeth, the separation movement feels more natural for the dentist. This approach provides excellent finger rest for optimal hand stability, enhances visualization, and ensures a uniform and controlled reduction.

Special IPR Burs

Eagle IPR burs, like the E11S, allow stripping parallel to the long axis of the teeth— the ideal position for IPR. Their unique diamond coating enables smooth and safe enamel reduction, making them suitable for both anterior and posterior teeth.

The IPR procedure is recommended at least six weeks after bracket bonding, when the teeth exhibit increased mobility. It is not advised to perform IPR on overlapping teeth due to the risk of uneven reduction.

How to Properly use Eagle IPR burs

Achieving uniform controlled IPR requires the right burs and technique. If you're struggling with regular diamond burs or want to enhance patient satisfaction while reducing chair time, try Eagle IPR burs and enjoy safe and efficient enamel reduction.

  1. Preparation: Begin by placing a wooden wedge to tip the teeth away from the area to be reduced. This weakens or slightly opens the contact point, allowing better access with the bur and reducing enamel removal by 0.1–0.5 mm for a more uniform result.
  2. Start from the Lingual side: Since contact points are usually positioned more toward the lingual side, it is best to start IPR from there whenever possible.
  3. Use the Right Technique:
    • Start with low RPM to achieve the correct angulation, then gradually increase speed to maximum RPM levels.
    • Use light, continuous movements with the bur. If resistance is encountered, switch to light push-stop motions for better control.
    • Use ample water to minimize heat generation and prevent potential damage.
    • If multiple areas require IPR, work one area at a time for greater precision.
    • Once complete, remove the wedge, measure, and record the IPR using a gauge key set.

Tips for Patient Safety & Bur Longevity

To ensure patient safety and to maximize the lifespan of your IPR burs, follow these guidelines:

  • Choose Right: Eagle IPR burs come in various types, diameters, and grits. Select the appropriate bur to remove enamel efficiently while minimizing unnecessary damage.
  • Break contact: Before using the burs, it's essential to break the contact between the teeth. One effective method is placing a wedge between the teeth to create space, making the IPR process smoother and more controlled.
  • Work gently: Avoid rapid or excessive buccal-lingual movements to prevent over-reduction and unintentional tissue damage.

Clinical Applications

Eagle IPR burs are designed for the precise and efficient slenderization and contouring of teeth in orthodontics. They help improve alignment, proportions, and aesthetics.

  • Crowding - IPR burs efficiently resolve crowding by creating space for tooth movement, ensuring an optimal fit and predictable outcomes for Invisalign® and other clear aligners.

  • Black Triangles - IPR burs help reduce or eliminate black triangles by reshaping proximal contacts.

  • Crown Proportions - IPR burs balance tooth proportions and correct Bolton discrepancies, ensuring seamless alignment between the upper and lower arches.

Eagle IPR burs profile

Unlike standard diamond burs like Mosquito (J10) or Needle burs, Eagle IPR burs are crafted from stronger materials and coated with special diamonds using a unique manufacturing process. Years of R&D have resulted in the finest IPR burs in the industry to ensure precise and consistent clinical results.

J316 - Ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 mm in diameter, this IPR diamond bur is specifically designed for interproximal reduction of anterior teeth. Its two-part design facilitates both slicing and re-contouring, enabling precise enamel removal while restoring the tooth's natural anatomy.

Z12S - Ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 mm, this IPR bur is perfect for Invisalign® and other clear aligner procedures, ensuring seamless interproximal reduction without separation.

E11S - Featuring a super-thin profile ranging from 0.2 to 0.65 mm, this IPR diamond bur is perfect for vertical interproximal reduction tailored to tooth morphology and axis. Its specialized diamond coating prevents micro-fractures in enamel, while the extended length improves visibility, enabling precise, safe tooth slenderization and ensuring uniform reduction.

J313 - Specifically designed for smoothing rough edges after IPR, this bur delivers a polished and refined finish, enhancing both patient comfort and satisfaction.
