What is Soft Tissue Trimming?

Soft tissue trimming is the process of reshaping or removing excess gingival tissue to improve esthetics, facilitate restorative procedures, or expose subgingival margins. Traditionally performed with scalpels or electrosurgery, modern techniques now include ceramic burs and gingivectomy burs, which allow for precise, blood-free soft tissue modification with minimal trauma and faster healing.

What is a Ceramic Bur?

A ceramic dental bur - also called a soft tissue trimmer or gingivectomy bur - is a high-precision rotary instrument designed for minimally invasive soft tissue trimming. It provides an efficient, blood-free alternative to scalpels, electrosurgery, and surgical blades. Made from durable biocompatible ceramic, it enables controlled tissue removal without causing excessive bleeding, burning, or thermal damage.

Unlike metal burs, ceramic burs do not require water cooling, ensuring stable and safe gingival preparation with minimal trauma. Their hard oxide points allow for precise cutting, making them ideal for a range of soft tissue and periodontal procedures.

Ceramic dental burs are commonly used for:

Gingival contouring to improve esthetic restorations
Soft tissue removal around crowns, implants, and orthodontic brackets
Exposure of subgingival margins for better restorative access
Crown lengthening to enhance retention and fit
Frenectomy and operculectomy for functional corrections
Implant exposure to uncover healing caps or prepare soft tissue around implants

Clinical Evidence

How to Properly Use Ceramic Burs

To achieve optimal results with Eagle Dental Ceramic Burs, follow these guidelines for safe and effective soft tissue trimming:

Position at a 45º angle on the targeted tissue.
Apply steady, even pressure across the area to ensure controlled, uniform tissue removal.
Target specific areas as needed - For additional coagulation or precise contouring, apply the bur to specific spots with gentle pressure.
Avoid over-reduction - Trim in small increments to ensure natural healing.
Avoid contact with hard surfaces such as teeth, as rapid impact may cause damage or breakage.
