Chairside Porcelain Polishing With an RA Shank
EVE Diapol RA polishers are diamond polishers for porcelain and ceramic restorations, made for the contra-angle (RA, latch-type) handpiece you already use at the chair. They let you adjust and re-polish a crown, veneer or inlay intraorally and bring the surface back to a glaze-like shine in seconds, so the case does not have to go back to the lab or into a furnace for a new glaze.
The system works in three grits (coarse, medium and fine), and each grit comes in four shapes. You can buy single polishers or one of the two introduction kits, which makes this page a practical starting point if you are building a porcelain polishing kit for chairside use.
What You Can Use It For
- Final polish of porcelain crowns, veneers and inlays after an adjustment
- Re-polishing ceramic contacts and occlusal areas after you reduce them
- Finishing chairside corrections on CAD/CAM ceramic restorations
- Restoring a smooth, glossy surface on feldspathic porcelain and glazed, layered ceramics
For lithium disilicate restorations, the dedicated EVE Diapro RA lithium disilicate polishers are the better match for that material.
Shapes and Sizes
Every shape is offered in coarse (C), medium (M) and fine (F). The last letter of the catalog number is the grit, so RD-RA-16M is the point shape in medium grit. Sizes below come from the product chart on this page.
| Cat. No. | Shape | Size (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| RD-RA-8 C/M/F | Wheel | 11 x 2 |
| RD-RA-14 C/M/F | Spiral wheel | 14 x 1.6 |
| RD-RA-16 C/M/F | Point | 4 x 10 |
| RD-RA-17 C/M/F | Cup | 6 x 7.5 |
How to pick a shape: the wheel covers broad labial and buccal surfaces, the spiral wheel adapts to curved surfaces and embrasures, the point reaches fissures, occlusal anatomy and line angles, and the cup works well on convex surfaces and cusp tips.
Grit Sequence: Coarse, Medium, Fine
The best shine comes from using all three grits in order. Each step removes the scratches left by the step before it.
| Step | Grit | Color |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Smooth | Coarse (C) | Blue |
| 2. Pre-polish | Medium (M) | Pink |
| 3. High gloss | Fine (F) | Gray |
Start with the coarse polisher to remove the marks left by your diamond bur after the adjustment. Move to medium to refine the surface, then finish with fine for the final gloss. If you skip a step, the fine polisher has to work on scratches it was not designed to remove, which costs time and usually leaves a duller, rougher surface.
Speed, Pressure and Heat
- Speed: the recommended operating range is 7,000 to 12,000 RPM in a contra-angle (RA) handpiece.
- Pressure: use light pressure. Let the diamond abrasive do the work instead of pushing harder.
- Movement: keep the polisher moving across the surface. Holding it in one spot creates uneven gloss and heat.
- Heat: use short, intermittent contact so heat does not build up in the restoration or the tooth.
Step-by-Step Intraoral Polishing
- Finish your adjustment (contact, occlusion or contour) with your usual fine diamond bur.
- Choose the shape that fits the area: wheel or spiral wheel for open surfaces, point or cup for anatomy and tight areas.
- Polish with the coarse (blue) polisher until the bur marks are gone.
- Switch to the medium (pink) polisher in the same shape and refine the surface.
- Finish with the fine (gray) polisher for a glaze-like shine that blends with the surrounding glaze.
- Check contacts and occlusion again before you seat or dismiss the patient.
Introduction Kits
- RDRAKIT1 (Introduction Kit 1): 9 EVE Diapol polishers for porcelain polishing.
- RDRAKIT2 (Introduction Kit 2): 6 spiral (Twist) polishers.
Single polishers are packed one per pack, so you can restock only the shapes and grits you use most.
RA Chairside vs. HP Lab Polishing
This page covers the RA (latch) version for intraoral, chairside porcelain polishing. If you polish ceramics at the bench or extraorally with a straight handpiece, the EVE Diapol HP porcelain polishers use the same three-grit system on an HP shank, with larger wheels for lab work.
