What Is a 330 Bur?
330 is the standard shape number of the pear shaped bur. The head is narrower at the tip and wider towards the neck, like a pear. This shape reaches into small cavities at the tip and gives a rounded, smooth outline as it widens.
What Are 330 Diamond Burs Used For?
- Cavity preparation: opening the cavity and shaping its outline
- Removing old fillings: removing old restorative materials from cavities
- Refining the preparation: smoothing the walls with the rounded edges of the head
330 Diamond Bur vs 245 Carbide Bur
Both are pear shaped burs used for cavity preparation. The 245 is the standard tungsten carbide pear bur, used for cavity preparation, trimming and amalgam work. A diamond bur like the 330 grinds enamel and ceramic efficiently and leaves a rougher surface, while a carbide bur cuts dentin and amalgam and leaves a smoother surface. The two numbers are not identical sizes, and head sizes differ between brands, so compare the head length and diameter before you switch. Our carbide version is the 245 carbide bur.
Choosing the Grit
Coarse and medium
Coarse grit removes enamel and old material fastest. Medium grit is the general-purpose choice and gives more control.
Fine and super fine
Available in the AB5 size, for smoothing and finishing the preparation.
How to Use a 330 Diamond Bur
- Use a high-speed (FG) handpiece with a generous water spray.
- Check that the bur is fully seated in the chuck.
- Enter the cavity with light, intermittent pressure and let the diamond cut.
- Follow the outline you planned, keeping the bur moving.
- Switch to a finer grit to smooth the walls, and replace the bur when it is worn or clogged.
