What Is a Barrel Bur?

A barrel bur has a barrel-shaped head: wide in the middle with rounded ends. The wide body reduces broad surfaces quickly, and the rounded ends avoid cutting sharp internal line angles into the tooth.

What Barrel Burs Are Used For

  • Lingual reduction: reducing the lingual (palatal) surface of anterior teeth for crowns
  • Crown and bridge preparation: reducing the axial walls and the biting surface

Choosing the Grit

Super coarse and coarse

The fastest bulk reduction, for the first pass of a crown or bridge preparation.

Medium

Slower and smoother, with more control for refining the shape. Many clinicians start with a coarse barrel bur and finish with a medium one.

Barrel Bur vs Football Bur

Both reduce lingual and occlusal surfaces. The barrel has straighter sides and rounded ends, so it removes more evenly across a broad surface. The oval, tapered football diamond burs follow concave lingual anatomy more closely.

Tips for Using a Barrel Bur

  • Use a high-speed handpiece with ample water spray.
  • Use light pressure and keep the bur moving across the surface.
  • Follow the natural contour of the tooth so that the reduction stays even.
  • Check the clearance often, and replace the bur when it is worn.

Complete the Preparation

After the bulk reduction, define the walls and margins with our crown preparation burs.
