Types of Dental Finishing Burs
Multi-blade carbide finishing burs
Carbide finishing burs have many fine blades that trim restoration margins and contours and leave a smooth surface.
Fine and extra-fine diamond finishing burs
Diamond finishing burs with fine and extra-fine grits smooth enamel and restorative materials and refine anatomy with little material removal.
White stone and abrasive burs
Abrasive stones are used for fine adjustment and finishing of restorations.
What Finishing Burs Are Used For
- Trimming and finishing restorations: refining margins, contours and occlusal anatomy
- Enameloplasty: conservative reshaping of small areas of enamel
- Soft tissue recontouring: reshaping gingival tissue
Finishing Bur vs Polishing Bur
A finishing bur shapes and smooths the restoration; a polisher produces the final gloss. The usual sequence is to finish first and polish second. For the polishing step see our composite polishers, discs and finishing kits.
How to Choose a Finishing Bur
- Material: carbide for resin, amalgam and metal; diamond for enamel, ceramic and tooth structure
- Shape: choose a flame, egg, round end taper or other shape that matches the anatomy you are finishing
- Grit or blade count: the finer the grit or the more blades, the smoother the surface and the slower the removal
- Shank: FG for high-speed handpieces and RA for slow-speed contra-angles
