Short Shank Bur vs Standard FG Bur
A standard FG bur is about 19 mm long. In a small mouth, or when the patient cannot open wide, the handpiece head can hit the opposing teeth or the lips before the bur reaches the tooth. A short shank bur sits deeper in the handpiece, so the head stays lower and you gain working space. Make sure the bur is fully seated in the chuck, because a short shank has less length to hold.
When to Use Short Shank Diamond Burs
- Pediatric dentistry: small mouths, primary and newly erupted molars
- Reduced mouth opening: after surgery, with temporomandibular joint problems, or in long procedures
- Limited interocclusal space: posterior areas with short vertical clearance
For adults with normal opening, the standard high speed FG burs offer the full range of shapes.
