What Is Gross Reduction?
Crown and bridge preparation reduces the occlusal surface and the axial walls so the restoration has enough thickness for strength and esthetics. The first pass removes most of the tooth structure and is called gross reduction. It should be fast, because it is the largest part of the work, and even, because errors made here are hard to correct later.
Gross Reduction vs Final Reduction
Gross reduction burs remove bulk. Once the planned reduction is reached, finer burs define the margins and smooth the walls. For burs matched to every stage, see our crown preparation burs; for the occlusal surface in particular, the occlusal reduction burs have a depth-controlled design.
Coarse or Medium Grit
Coarse grit is the usual choice for gross reduction because it removes tooth structure and old restorations fastest. Medium grit (BR1) cuts more gently and suits cases where you want more control, for example in a tooth with thin enamel.
