Rounded Shoulder vs Chamfer Margin: Which Bur?

A shoulder margin is a flat ledge at the base of the axial wall; a rounded shoulder softens the internal angle so there is no sharp corner to concentrate stress, which is why it is widely used for all-ceramic and zirconia crowns. A chamfer margin is curved and tapers out. Use this cylinder bur for a rounded shoulder, and the round end tapered chamfer burs for a chamfer. A tapered version of the shoulder is the tapered round shoulder burs.

Cavity Preparation with a Cylinder Diamond Bur

The straight head shapes parallel walls and a flat floor, and the rounded shoulder avoids a sharp internal line angle. Finish with a finer bur if you need a smoother surface.
